Finding the ESN/IMEI/SERIAL number on mobile devices

All mobile and other devices have unique serial nos for identification. A mobile phone has IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity).  Likely CDMA phone has ESN (Electronic Serial Number). So how do we check our device serial nos. Here are some tips.

IPOD
You can find an iPod’s serial number in a number of places:

  • On the Outside of the Device
  • On the “About” screen

The serial number is engraved on the back or under the clip. There are some photos of the location of the serial number on the most popular iPods on the Apple Support site.

The serial number will appear on the iPod’s “About” screen. To find it:

  1. Turn on the device.
  2. Select “Settings.”
  3. Select “General.”
  4. Select “About.”
  5. Press the center button until the serial number appears.

In iTunes
If the iPod is synched with the iTunes software on your computer, you will be able to find the serial number there. To do that;

  1. Connect your device to a computer with iTunes.
  2. Select the iPod when it appears in the “Devices” section of the menu on the left side of the iTunes window.
  3. Select the “Summary” tab and the serial number should appear on the screen.Note: On older versions of the iPod Shuffle (1st and 2nd generations), the serial number will be found behind the “Settings” tab in iTunes.

iPod Touch and other iPod models
If you are looking for the serial number on a Touch or other iPod model that doesn’t display a “Summary” tab on the screen, try selecting the “Settings” tab. The number should appear there.

IPAD
An iPad’s serial number is available in a number of places:
On the Outside of the Device
Like the iPod Touch, the serial number appears on the back of the iPad. Go to the Apple Support site to see a photo of the number’s location.
On the About screen
The serial number will appear on the iPad’s “About” screen. To find it:

  1. Turn on the device.
  2. Select “Settings.”
  3. Select “General.”
  4. Select “About.”
  5. The serial number will appear with the information about the iPad.

In iTunes
If the iPad is synched with the iTunes software on your computer, you will be able to find the serial number there. To do that;

  1. Start iTunes on a computer.
  2. Connect the iPad to the computer.
  3. Select “Device” in the upper right corner of the window. If you don’t see your device, you may need to create more room on the toolbar by collapsing the sidebar by choosing “Hide sidebar” in the “View” menu.
  4. Select the “Summary” tab. The serial number will appear with the general information about the device.

IPHONE
An iPhone’s serial number can be found on the outside of the handset, but some carriers use phones that don’t have a serial number engraved on the outside surface. The serial number is available on those phones as part of the information displayed on the “About” screen. It might be easier to use the IMEI number or the ESN number as the individual device’s unique identification number.

On the Outside of the device

  • iPhone 5s, iPhone 5c and iPhone 5:
The IMEI is on the back of the device near the bottom. The MEID number uses the first 14 digits of the IMEI number, ignoring the last digit.
  • iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 (GSM model) and iPhone 4:
The IMEI and serial number are on the SIM tray.
  • Original iPhone:
The serial and IMEI numbers are printed on the back of the device near the bottom.

On the About screen
The serial number, IMEI, ESN and MEID numbers are all available on the iPhone’s “About” screen. To find that information:

  1. Unlock your iPhone and select “Settings.”
  2. Select “General.”
  3. Select “About.”
  4. The ID numbers will appear on that screen.

ANDROID
There will be some variation on where the serial/IMEI/ESN numbers show up on the outside of Android phones. Those identifiers will always be available through the “Applications” tab of the device.
On the Outside of the device
Because there are quite a few companies making Android handsets, it is difficult to provide device-specific information on the location of the serial/IMEI/ESN numbers for all those devices. Generally, the numbers are either on the back of the device or under the device’s battery. If you take your time and look carefully, you should be able to find an identifier on the outside. If you have trouble, visit the “support” area of the device manufacturer’s website for help.

On the “Settings” screen
The IMEI number is available on the “Settings” screen of Android devices. To find it:

  1. Unlock your Android phone and select the “Applications” tab.
  2. Select “About Phone.”
  3. Select “Status.”
  4. The phone’s IMEI and ESN numbers will appear on that screen.
